Severe thunderstorms expected to roll through the Buffalo area into the early evening prompted Canalside to cancel events and activities that were scheduled for the evening.

Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service .

“It’s going to be around for the remainder of the afternoon into the early evening. It will clear from west to east. Probably the main event will be over by early this evening and then the rainfall should start to wind down after 8 or 9 o’clock or so,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Mitchell.

Southwest winds are forecast at 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent, the weather service said, The high should be near 76.

Showers and thunderstorms also are possible this evening, mainly before 10 p.m. and gusts may be as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 10 a.m. Wednesday. But the new day should be partly sunny, with a high near 71.

“It should be dry through the morning for the most part and we’ll have one last piece of energy move through tomorrow afternoon,” said Mitchell.

That will likely bring scattered thunderstorms in the early afternoon, he added. Clear skies are forecast through Saturday. The next chance of thunderstorms appears to be on Sunday.
