World War II Army paratrooper Doral E. Cummings earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his actions in ground combat in the Normandy Invasion, but never received the Bronze Star.

On Wednesday, in a ceremony in the office of Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, Cummings’ son David, of North Tonawanda, and other members of his family were presented the Bronze Star and nine other medals he earned during the conflict.

Cummings, who became a control systems engineer and died in 1997 at age 72, appeared in one of the most famous wartime photos of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, taken during his meeting with paratroopers in England on the day before D-Day.
