Tonawanda Coke has been issued two violation notices by the state Department of Environmental Conservation following an explosion Jan. 31 at its River Road plant, state records show.
A violation notice dated Feb. 7 was issued for failure to maintain equipment. DEC investigators found that the facility failed to maintain its east and west flares, which are used to burn off excess coke oven gas.
A second violation dated Feb. 26 was issued for failure to report the release of a hazardous substance in a timely manner. The company did not report the explosion to the DEC’s Spill Hotline within two hours as required by law, according to the agency.
