The $16.3 million replacement of four Youngmann Highway bridges over Delaware Avenue and Military Road in the Town of Tonawanda began this week, state transportation officials announced.
Lane closings on Delaware and Military near the I-290 have begun and will be maintained through the year, the DOT said in a news release. The closings are required to relocate utilities and install temporary detour ramps and traffic signals,
Next spring, the ramps and signals will control traffic on Delaware Avenue at Exit 1 through the 2015 construction season. I-290 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction. Also, traffic from Delaware Avenue to I-290 westbound will follow posted detours. Construction is expected to conclude in the fall of 2016.
The project features “a detour and traffic control plan that maintains safety and is least disruptive to commuter and commercial traffic during construction,” DOT Regional Director Darrell F. Kaminski said in a statement.
The contractor is Union Concrete Construction.
