An explosion around midnight Wednesday caused “significant damage” to two buildings at the Praxair Inc. Technology Center in the Town of Tonawanda, the company said Thursday. Police estimate the damage at about $250,000.
The company said there was an energy release at a research and development lab in the complex at 175 East Park Drive. It said the cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
No employees were in the buildings at the time of the explosion and no one was injured, according to the company and Town of Tonawanda police.
The first officer who arrived on the scene reported heavy smoke and flames, police said.
The buildings affected by the explosion were closed and employees were asked to work from home or at other facilities. Other buildings at the complex were thoroughly examined after the incident, the company said.
The Town of Tonawanda, City of Tonawanda and Grand Island fire departments responded to assist. Erie County Fire investigators were also called to assist with the investigation.
