WHEATFIELD – Police are investigating the theft of more than $2,000 from the Wheatfield Volunteer Firefighters Benevolent Association, saying that a relative of the group’s treasurer took the money to help her boyfriend.

During a recent review of the group’s account, the treasurer discovered several checks missing from the business account. After contacting the group’s bank, it was learned that 11 fraudulently written checks had been cashed by the same woman since Aug. 4, totaling $2,172. One other check was recovered and destroyed, and another remains outstanding, sheriff’s deputies said.

When confronted with the discovery, the suspect reportedly told investigators that she had used the money to help her jailed boyfriend. The case has been turned over to sheriff’s detectives for further investigation.
