NORTH TONAWANDA – Arson investigators are back on the job in a Fifth Avenue neighborhood that has seen more than its share of suspicious fires recently, after another fire early Sunday.
The fire, of unknown origin, started around 3:15 a.m. in a multi-family home that had previously been targeted. It began in an unoccupied first-floor apartment and caused an estimated $40,000 damage before being brought under control. Residents from two other units in the building escaped safely prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
The neighborhood is the same that had been targeted several times weeks ago, ultimately resulting in the arrest of 42-year-old Michelle L. Johnston on multiple counts of arson. According to officials, Johnston was being held at the Niagara County Jail until being bailed out early this weekend.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of Sunday’s fire.
