The state Department of Taxation and Finance will be making robocalls to more than 600,000 state residents who have still failed to sign up for the basic STAR property tax exemption.
“The deadline of Dec. 31, 2013 is quickly approaching,” said Commissioner Thomas H. Mattox. “We’re reaching out to hundreds of thousands of homeowners who haven’t yet registered with the simple message – act soon to avoid losing this valuable benefit.”
Although more than two million homeowners have registered for the basic STAR exemption, 620,000 have not, according to the tax department. The average savings to homeowners who apply for basic STAR is $700.
Basic STAR is available on the primary residence of homeowners who have incomes under $500,000. To register, visit www.tax.ny.gov or call (518) 457-2036. Translation services are available.
