Gov. Andrew Cuomo today proposed keeping Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s state funding stable during the next fiscal year.

Cuomo’s proposed state budget includes $103 million in state support for the comprehensive cancer center.

The proposed Roswell Park funding includes money to replace an expiring $25 million capital grant to the institute through a commensurate amount of “local assistance funds.”

Roswell Park received $102.6 million in the 2013-24 fiscal year, accounting for about 16.5 percent of its $623 million operating budget.

Roswell Park officials were not available to comment on the governor’s budget proposal. But it likely comes as good news, considering that in 2012 Cuomo proposed making the cancer center “operationally independent.”

That proposal would have ended Roswell Park’s state subsidy.

The budget document did not offer details on the local assistance funds to replace the expiring $25 million state HEAL NY program grant that comprised part of the overall state support for the cancer center.
