A theater production tax credit in the 2014-15 state budget could benefit Shea’s Performing Arts Center and other upstate theaters.

Producers who begin live productions within New York State will now be eligible for a 25 percent tax credit, making the state just the fourth jurisdiction in the United States to offer financial incentives.

A statement from the Broadway League, the national trade association of the commercial theater industry, said there were “at least eight upstate theatres that are ideal for teaching and launching new plays and musicals” currently being lost to three other states with tax incentives.
