The Historic Lewiston Jazz Festival, unfolding this weekend on Center Street in Lewiston, has been growing over the years, and now it’s major league. The festival starts at 5 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday, with artists performing simultaneously on various stages.
Friday’s headliner is saxophonist Bobby Militello, preceded by the gifted pianist George Caldwell, now based in Buffalo. The festival culminates Saturday night with a big band extravaganza paying tribute to the late vibes great and bandleader Lionel Hampton. Leading the band and playing vibes is Jason Marsalis, the youngest of the famous Marsalis brothers of New Orleans. Joining the band as the featured singer is the barrel-voiced Kansas City-born baritone Kevin Mahogany.
Lots of local artists round out the festival, and, as board member Carol Calato said, “By local, we mean Buffalo, Toronto, Rochester and Erie.” Also look for a car show featuring antique Jaguars, booths selling local wines and other delicacies, and the ever-popular jewelry show.
As always, the festival is free. Parking is also free and is available in the lower level lot at Artpark. Seating is limited and it is suggested you bring your own chairs. For more information, call 754-8271 or visit www.lewistonjazz.com.
