An Etihad Airways 777-300 flying from Abu Dhabi to Pearson International Airport outside Toronto was diverted to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport late this afternoon due to thunderstorms in the Toronto area, said C. Douglas Hartmayer, NFTA spokesman.

The plane carrying 367 people landed in Buffalo around 5:20 p.m. and by 6 p.m. it had taken on fuel and was awaiting clearance for takeoff, Hartmayer said.

A large plane such as the 777-300 landing in Buffalo is not unheard of, he said.

“We get them from time to time, especially from Toronto when there are weather-related situations going on up north,” he said.
