NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – An ailing woman was found dead and her husband was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center for treatment of suspected self-inflicted gunshot wounds after police were called to their apartment early Thursday morning.

The man, reportedly in his 70s, was said to be in stable condition at the Buffalo hospital Thursday evening.

Niagara Regional Police would not release the couple’s names or discuss the circumstances of the continuing investigation.

Police were called to the Laura Secord Apartments at 56511 Valley Way here at about 4:30 a.m. a.m. and summoned paramedics and firefighters for assistance.

Neighbors of the couple told Canadian news media representatives the elderly woman had suffered a stroke a few years ago and her husband recently began using a walker while he continued to care for her.

The woman’s body was taken to a Hamilton, Ont. hospital late for an autopsy.
