A woman and her horse were killed Saturday morning when struck by a farm truck on Route 75 in Eden.
Kathryn M. Tyrrell, 49, of Hickox Road, Eden, was riding near the shoulder of the road about 6:40 a.m. when the truck approached them on a curve from behind and hit her and the horse, Eden Police Lt. John McCarthy said.
Tyrrell was pronounced dead at the scene, McCarthy said.
The incident, which occurred between New Oregon Road an East Church Street, closed the roadway for most of the morning. It reopened just before noon.
McCarthy said neither Tyrrell nor the horse displayed any type of reflective material on. The vehicle was carrying animal feed and was traveling between farms, police added.
Police also said another motorist earlier had taken evasive action to avoid striking Tyrrell and her horse, McCarthy said.
The incident is being investigated by Eden police and the accident investigation unit of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the farm truck was not injured, police said.
