DUNKIRK – Police Chief David Ortolano said his department will plan strict traffic enforcement in school zones throughout the city.
He said the speed limit is 15 mph for all zones throughout the city except for in front of School 3, where the limit is 20 mph.
The chief said that many children in the city walk to and from school and that the speed limits will be enforced between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on all school days.
Ortolano said motorists need to follow the directions of crossing guards in each of the areas.
He added that officers from his department also will be promoting bike safety. He said that bike riders need to obey all rules of the road no matter what their age. “It’s a matter of parents educating the children and setting a good example,” he said.
Stopping for school buses with red lights flashing also is an important safety issue in the city, the chief said. He said motorists who fail to stop for a school bus will face strict penalties that include fines and points on their driver’s license.
