Holland School Director of Curriculum Laurie Gregory has been appointed interim elementary principal after Michael Dodge, just 18 months on the job, left for the Fillmore Central School District where he will be principal for grades 5-12 starting immediately.
Holland School Superintendent Cathy Fabiatos said Thursday, “There’s been a lot of change here. We need some calm. It will be easier for the teachers to not have to learn a new person.”
Gregory has already been working closely with the staff to ease in the Common Core, the superintendent said.
Dodge’s unexpected departure from H.O. Brumsted Elementary School adds to the administrative turnover in recent months and leaves Fabiatos—just six months at the helm herself—with a spate of interim administrators to help run the district.
In early December, Holland’s former Director of Pupil Personnel Services Deborah Lips resigned to accept a position outside of the school system. In addition, the district has operated with an interim business official since Patrice Beadle unexpectedly resigned in July.
The veterans on staff are Carl Guidotti, junior/senior high school principal, just 18 months into his Holland tenure, and Gregory, now fifteen months on the job.
Fabiatos has called the staff departures “challenging,” but put a positive spin on the administrative turnover. “There’s been so much upheaval, but I see it as opportunity to reassess our administrative staff and setup. It gives us a chance to look at things a little differently, take our time,” Fabiatos said.
She said a permanent replacement for Dodge should be in place by the summer.
In the meantime the Board is interviewing candidates for the business leader position. Retired Hamburg business administrator Thomas Bagley has filled the post on an interim basis since Beadle’s departure, which occurred just days before Fabiatos took office. The district expects a permanent business official to be appointed at the Board’s regular meeting next Monday.
