Town of Eden officials are warning residents not to handle stray cats and dogs because they may be rabid.

Raymond Zabron, the town’s animal control officer, spoke about rabid animals during Wednesday night’s meeting of the Town Board.

The discovery of a rabid cat in the Town of Newstead has raised awareness about rabies again, he told board members. He encountered rabid animals last year.

Zabron urged residents to notify town or Erie County officials if they see a stray cat or dog.

“We advise not to feed stray animals,” he said.

Residents may call Zabron’s office at 992-3408.
