Schumer wants equipment for VA hospital

There’s another backlog at veterans hospitals, according to Sen. Charles Schumer, who says that doctors and patients wait for two years or more to get important medical equipment because of problems in the procurement process. He launches a campaign to speed things up when he speaks at 1:15 p.m. in Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Servicemen’s Park.

World War II vet to get medals

A World War II veteran will get his Bronze Star and other service medals from Rep. Brian Higgins in a ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Town of Tonawanda Veterans Memorial at Walter Kenney Field, Brighton Road and Colvin Boulevard. Cpl. Lawrence Titzler, retired assistant principal at Tonawanda High School, served in Europe in the 303rd Medical Battalion of the 78th Infantry Division.

Non-violence campaign

With Buffalo ranking as the fourth most violent city of its size in the nation, a summer campaign to promote neighborhood peace kicks off from noon to 4 p.m. at West Ferry and Grant streets. Buffalo Common Council members, youth advocates and religious and community leaders will join with the Stop the Violence Coalition in the program.

Nuns on the Bus leader at Chautauqua

Religious leader, attorney and poet Sister Simone Campbell, who led the “Nuns on the Bus” advocacy tours, has been seen on “60 Minutes,” “The Colbert Report” and as a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. She focuses on this week’s Chautauqua Institution afternoon theme – economic justice – when she appears at 2 p.m. in the Hall of Philosophy.

Lancaster starts its 4th celebration

Lancaster isn’t waiting for the weekend to start celebrating the Fourth of July. The village’s Independence Days begin from 6 to 11 p.m. in the parking lot of the Save-A-Lot grocery store, 10 Aurora St., with a midway, chicken barbecue, a beer garden and live music by the Strangers. The parade and fireworks happen Friday.

Fall Out Boys at Darien Lake

The area’s big outdoor music venues are busy tonight. At Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, it’s the pop punk band Fall Out Boy with Paramore at 7 p.m. The Outdoor Amphitheater at Artpark features alt-rockers O.A.R. and 2012 “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips at 6:30.
