Heat advisory today
A heat advisory is posted from 1 to 9 p.m. for Genesee and Orleans counties and places to the east, but it’s going to be a scorcher everywhere. Look for highs around 90 or better with lots of humidity and a hot wind before showers and thunderstorms roll in late this afternoon.
World Cup parties this afternoon
Weather won’t deter soccer fans from gathering outdoors for another World Cup watching party on the big screens set up in Canalside in downtown Buffalo. on Hertel Avenue and Niagara Falls as Team USA takes on Belgium at 4 p.m. In Niagara Falls, they’ll be watching big screens on Old Falls Street and the party starts at 3.
Marcell Dareus has court date
The reckless endangerment case against Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Marcell Dareus, postponed last month, is scheduled to come up for a hearing today in Hamburg Town Court. The Pro Bowler allegedly was racing fellow lineman Jerry Hughes on May 30 when his 2012 Jaguar veered across two lanes of oncoming traffic on Mile Strip Road near McKinley Mall and hit a tree in front of the Mongolian Buffet restaurant.
Daemen designates landmark
In a ceremony at 3 p.m., Daemen College’s Rosary Hall will be officially designated a historic landmark. Formerly the Crouch-Waite Mansion, built in the Italian Renaissance style in 1912, it was designed by George Cary, the Buffalo architect responsible for the Buffalo History Museum and the Pierce-Arrow administration building.
Canada Day across the border
It’s Canada Day across the border. The 28th Friendship Festival in Mather Park in Fort Erie, Ont., will have carnival rides, War of 1812 activities, the finals of the festival talent contest and celebratory fireworks at 10 p.m. Niagara Falls, Ont., also has fireworks at 10.
Blue Rodeo at Artpark
Formed 30 years ago in Toronto, the country-rock band Blue Rodeo is one of Canada’s musical treasures. So where do they spend Canada Day? On this side of the Niagara River, performing in Artpark’s Outdoor Amphitheater in Lewiston. Fellow countrymen 54-40 kick things off at 6:30 p.m.
BPO concert at Knox Farm
The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concert at 7 p.m. in Knox Farm, State Park, East Aurora, is free, but for $100 there’s Bubbles and Brews with BPO, a garden party at 5 p.m. with food stations, open bar, champagne and beer. Proceeds benefit the continuing restoration of the park’s Main House.
