A Seneca Nation Council member hopes to become the first woman president of the Seneca Nation of Indians.

Darlene Miller, the former acting CEO of Seneca Nation Health Systems, announced her candidacy today on the sidewalk outside the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino.

She said she is running for the “unborn Seneca children and all Seneca members.” She said she also wants to promote healthy minds and bodies and ensure quality education for all Senecas, and will put people before politics.

“I will look to the people for guidance,” she said.

Miller, who also announced her candidacy earlier today in Salamanca, has been a councillor for nearly four years.

A lifelong resident of the Allegany Territory, she was accompanied by fellow councillors Richard Nephew and Jeffrey Gill. Miller is running on the newly-formed One Nation Party.

The Seneca Nation, which operates three casinos, is one of the region’s largest employers.
