At least eight Democrats – some well known in political circles – are already campaigning for the vacant District 3 seat in the County Legislature resulting from the resignation earlier this month of veteran Legislator Lynn M. Marinelli.
Former Legislator Michele M. Iannello, Deputy Corporation Counsel Peter J. Savage III and Buffalo Board of Education member Jason M. McCarthy are among those expressing serious interest, according to Erie County Democratic Chairman Jeremy J. Zellner.
Others include Kenmore Mayor Patrick Mang; Jennifer L. DiAgostino, executive director of the Coalition for Economic Justice; Joel P. Feroleto, an aide to State Sen. Mark J. Grisanti, R-Buffalo; Amber A. Small, executive director of the Parkside Community Association; and Chris Becker, a private-sector businessman and Iraq War veteran.
Zellner said he has spoken to all of those interested except Savage but is aware that Savage is discussing his bid with other top Democrats. Savage is close to the Democratic organization of Mayor Byron W. Brown, while Iannello is married to Erie County Democratic Elections Commissioner Dennis E. Ward, an ally of Zellner and the party organization.
Marinelli, the longest-serving legislator in County Hall, resigned to take a local economic development post with the Cuomo administration.
Zellner said the next step in the process will be to review résumés he has requested from interested Democrats, expected to begin at the deadline for submission Tuesday. The chairman said he expects the Legislature’s tradition of honoring the choice of committee members from the vacant district will again be honored some time in the coming weeks.
“I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t,” he said.
