A Grand Island man seriously injured when his ATV overturned Saturday afternoon was saved from freezing to death when emergency responders located him by tracing his cellphone signal.
The accident, which occurred on Grand Island near the National Grid right of way. less than a mile northwest of 1700 Whitehaven Road, was reported at 2:23 p.m.
Greg Van Norman , 19, was crossing a creekbed when his ATV overturned and landed on him, injuring his legs, the Grand Island Fire Company said.
Buffalo 911 operators helped locate the victim by “pinging” his cellphone, Deputy Fire Chief Matt Osinski said in a news release. Were it not for the cellphone location, fire officials believe Van Norman would not have survived the extreme cold – with windchills near zero – because he was by himself and in a fairly remote location.
