A man believed to be in his 50s was fatally shot by a gunman about 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the 300-block of Herkimer Street, near West Delavan Avenune, Buffalo homicide detectives said.

The gunman was seen running to a car parked nearby and driving off, according to a neighborhood resident who asked not to be identified. Police would only say the gunman acted alone.

The victim was declared dead at the scene. Police in earlier reports had said the victim was in his 20s.

Detective Chief Dennis J. Richards said a search is underway for the gunman. Yellow crime scene tape blocked off Herkimer at West Delavan as police sought out information from neighborhood residents late Thursday afternoon.

Buffalo Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said anyone with information is asked to either call or text the Buffalo Police Confidential TIPCALL Line at (716) 847-2255.
