A utility lineman was awarded about $5.6 million in damages for injuries suffered after falling about 30 feet from a utility pole.

John Jourdan’s fall occurred during a NYSEG utility project in West Seneca on Aug. 12, 2010, and was blamed on NYSEG’s failure to provide any safety device.

Jourdan, 33, a Michigan resident and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, was working for a NYSEG subcontractor when he suffered severe knee and hip and back injuries that led to his permanent disability, authorities said.

The case was heard before State Supreme Court Justice Donna M. Siwek.
