SHERMAN – Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies said a motorist distracted while using a cellphone crashed into a utility pole on West Main Street in the village shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday.

Tara D. VanVolkenburg, 21, was charged with driving while intoxicated and having an open container of alcohol in her 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. While driving west, deputies said, VanVolkenburg crossed into the eastbound lane and hit a street sign before crashing into the utility pole, deputies added.

She faces an appearance in Sherman Town Court.
