Buffalo firefighters were kept busy early Sunday with two house fires along the Kensington Expressway that left 12 persons homeless.

At 12:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire at 140 Parkridge Avenue, near Kensington and Bailey avenues, that started in an upstairs bedroom, according to the Buffalo Fire Department.

The two-story frame house was occupied by six adults and six children, none of whom was injured but all of whom were left homeless by the blaze, fire officials said. The Red Cross is assisting them.

The fire cause an estimated $10,000 damage to the home and $5,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A second fire broke out in a two-story house at 77 Shirley Avenue shortly after 6 a.m near the Kensington Expressway east of Harlem Road. The fire apparently broke out in a basement apartment, causing $20,000 in damage to the building and $10,000 damage to the contents, fire officials said.

The cause of that fire is also under investigation. No injuries were reported.
