LOCKPORT – An Akron man was taken to Erie County Medical Center with head injuries and a New York State police lieutenant was treated and released with elbow and wrist injuries following a two-car crash on the Lockport Bypass just south of Ohio Street at 8 a.m. today .

State Police Lieutenant Craig Wing, an officer in the Lockport State Police barracks, was on duty in an unmarked vehicle heading south on the Lockport Bypass when a northbound vehicle, a Ford Contour being driven by Riley Wahl, 20, of Akron, apparently lost control and suddenly swerved into the path of the police car, according to State Police Sgt. Mark Lepczyk.

Lepczyk said there was extensive damage to both vehicles.

Wahl was taken to ECMC with a possible concussion and is in stable condition and Wing was taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport where he was treated and released suffering from a fractured elbow and wrist.

The accident investigation unit was called to the scene and the cause of the crash is under investigation. Charges against Wahl are pending, said Lepczyk.
