A small boat caught fire in the Niagara River this afternoon, but the four people on it were not hurt, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
The 17-foot vessel was in the river off of Strawberry Island. It was likely an electrical fire, said Paul Angelillo, a Coast Guard search and rescue controller.
A man on a nearby boat called the Coast Guard’s Buffalo sector and reported the boat was in flames, according to the Buffalo office.
The caller went to assist the boat and said that the people on it were fighting the fire, possibly with a portable extinguisher, Angelillo said. The Coast Guard and the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit responded to the call.
The Good Samaritan towed the boat into a marina.
Angelillo said it wasn’t a catastrophic fire and didn’t burn to the water line. The boat was salvageable enough to be towed and those on it never had to evacuate, he said.
