The occupant of an Amherst apartment building died in a fire that caused a partial roof collapse and more than $1 million in damage early today.
Firefighters were called to the eight-unit complex at 285 Scamridge Curve – just east of the Youngmann Highway, between Main Street and Sheridan Drive – at 2:11 a.m. Amherst police evacuated most of the residents and the Snyder Fire Department used ladders to rescue two people and a cat from an upper apartment.
The building suffered extensive fire and water damage and part of the roof collapsed.
The occupant of the apartment where the fire started was killed in the blaze. Amherst police confirmed a fatality but had no other information on the victim or the cause of the fire.
