LOCKPORT – A Niagara County Jail corrections officer was threatened and then kicked as he attempted to secure a cell door on Saturday. A report on the case was released on Wednesday.

The inmate, Hayes K. Hamby, 17, of Upper Mountain Road, Sanborn was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree harassment, third-degree menacing and second-degree obstructing governmental administration. He was arraigned in the Town of Lockport and bail was set at $1,000. He will return to court Thursday.

Officer Jeffrey D. Bernhard had reportedly confiscated strings that Hamby had pulled out of a mattress and was attempting to put around his neck, but said Hamby would not hand over the mattress. Hamby allegedly used the mattress as a type of a shield and approached the officer in a threatening manner and then kicked him in the groin and tried to push past him and out of his cell. Bernhard was able to secure the door and call for help.
