Town of Evans police today were looking for the driver of a sport utility vehicle who drove off after fatally striking a man walking on Route 5 near Gold Street overnight.
Police believe the victim, Barry Moss, 52, of the Town of Evans, was killed by a Ford SUV traveling west toward the Town of Brant sometime overnight. The driver fled after the accident, which occurred on a section of Route 5 known as Erie Road, police said.
Moss’s body was found several hours later by a citizen who arrived at a nearby business at about 6 a.m., Lt. Douglas Czora said.
Police asked the public to provide information to help locate a newer model Ford SUV with front passenger and side passenger damage.
Czora said police were following several leads this afternoon.
The area, Czora said, is known for car-deer accidents, and police asked that anyone who may have hit something on Route 5 overnight and believed it to be a deer or other animal contact the Evans Police Department.
