WILSON – No injuries were reported after a Canadian Royale Air Force search and rescue helicopter made an emergency landing in a farmer’s field in the 3100 block of Lake Road around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

The helicopter had been performing a search and rescue operation along with the U.S. Coast Guard after a report of a ship in distress on Lake Ontario, when a bird flew into the engine compartment, according to Niagara County sheriff’s deputies.

The helicopter pilot, James Christopher, said the crew performed the emergency landing to make sure no damage was done before they flew back to Ontario. No injuries were reported to Christopher or his four crew members.

Border Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard responded and U.S. Customs was notified. The helicopter returned without incident.
