Marah Penn of Hamburg was even on the day. That’s exactly what she needed to win the New York State Golf Association Girls Amateur Championship at Ridgemont Country Club in Rochester Wednesday.

Penn shot a 73 for a two-day total of 149. She won by two strokes over Maren Cipolla (Lewiston) and Chelsea Dantonio (Lancaster), who tied for second with totals of 151.

Penn made seven birdies, eight bogeys and one double bogey in the two-round event.

Dantonio held the lead after the first day, shooting a 73, but fired a five-over 78 Wednesday with seven bogeys to just two birdies.

Four other Western New Yorkers had top-10 finishes – Depew’s Sarah Godfrey-Singleton (tied for fourth), North Tonawanda’s Lauren Kase (tied for eighth, 157), Orchard Park’s Sydney Shaw (tied for eighth, 157) and Lewiston’s Victoria Parker (tied for 10th, 159).

In the Boys Championship, Aidan Shaw of Orchard Park finished tied for third. He fired a 78 on Wednesday for a two-day total of 158. The winner, Will Thompson of Pittsford, ran away with the title, firing an eight-under 136.

Ian Wagner (Medina) finished fifth with a two-day total of 159 while Jacob Mertz (Williamsville) was sixth with a 160.

In the Junior Division, David Hanes (Elma) finished tied for fourth with a two-day total of 147. Rochester’s Andrew Fedele won the event with a one-under total of 143. Williamsville’s Gregory Sibick (tied for eighth, 148) and Clarence Center’s Marc Holzhauer (10th, 149) were the other top-10 finishers from Western New York.
