More than 2,500 pounds of school supplies were collected by thousands of students in four Erie County school districts for girls in SOLA, the School of Leadership in Afghanistan.
The supplies are scheduled to arrive in Kabul this week and be delivered to the school before a celebration commemorating the fifth anniversary of the founding of the organization, according to local coordinator Anthony Agnello.
Students from 20 schools in Orchard Park, Williamsville, Springville Griffith and Hamburg school districts and others collected school supplies last June.
Agnello, a former Orchard Park teacher who serves on the Orchard Park School Board, said his former Peace Corps program director arranged for the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Team House staff to facilitate duty-free processing of the supplies through Kabul customs.
Western New York students dedicated the outreach to bring awareness to the American servicemen and women serving in Afghanistan who are returning with from duty with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
