A 43-year-old Orchard Park man was arrested at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after two incidents caused Big Tree Road to be closed from Abbott Road to Southwestern Boulevard for a time, town police said in a statement released this morning.

The man, whose name was not released, first got Orchard Park police’s attention after he dumped a suspicious package on the steps of the Orchard Park Municipal Center. Police received reports that a man in a black Dodge Charger had dumped the package. Once they inspected and determined the package was not a threat, they found that the vehicle was registered to a Big Tree Road resident.

When patrol officers went to his house, the man’s wife told them she believed he had walked into the woods behind the house with a shotgun, and that he was upset and possibly suffering from mental health issues. Police evacuated the wife and daughter from their house.

Once additional officers from Orchard Park police and other agencies arrived, nearby residences were evacuated and perimeters were established. While officers were conducting a search for the man, he returned home, where he was taken into custody. He is being evaluated.

Orchard Park police were assisted by Hamburg police, Erie County Sheriff’s deputies, state police and the state police aviation unit.
