OLEAN – With a slight quaver in his voice, Olean Police Chief Terry Schnell announced that he will be taking off his shield and calling it a career after more than three decades on the job.
“It has been my privilege to serve the citizens of the community for the past 32 years, and I appreciate the support I have received from the various administrations,” Schnell said, reading a prepared statement to the members of the Olean City Council on Tuesday night.
“I would like to thank Chief Schnell for his 32 years of service with the Olean Police Department,” Mayor William Aiello said. “Under his leadership, the department has moved forward.”
Schnell will bring an end to his service with the Olean Police Department on July 12.
Schnell was named the city’s top police officer in 2006 after Brian Donnelly stepped down. At that time, David J. Carucci was moving into the mayor’s office. Schnell has seen that term, as well as that of Linda Witte, pass.
Aiello said his search for a successor will start immediately, with plans of having someone in place prior to Schnell’s exit.
