OLEAN – The alleged perpetrator of an early morning stabbing in the city has been caught.
The Olean Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit arrested Khuong M. Nguyen, 34, of Sullivan St., at about 1:15 p.m. Thursday, on a charge of second-degree assault. Investigators said Nguyen stabbed Joseph Gilroy, 48, of S. 3rd St. near a West State Street establishment. Gilroy was stabbed in the head and back.
When police confronted Nguyen early Thursday morning, officials said, he ran away, prompting a search that was joined by Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Deputies and New York State Police.
Olean Police received the call to Gilroy’s residence just before 3 a.m. Gilroy was taken to Olean General Hospital where he was treated for his wounds and released.
Nguyen was arrested at his home. The proximity of the residence to the Olean High School prompted a partial lockdown as a safety precaution, Olean Police Capt. Robert Blovsky said.
