CHANGE OF SCENE – The winter season of lectures in the Central Library has ended for the Center for the Study of Art, Architecture, History & Nature, but the summer season in Chautauqua Institution is just beginning.

Today sees the start of the Archives Heritage Lecture Series, which will take place every Tuesday and Friday through Aug. 22 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Hall of Christ. The series is led by Jon Schmitz, Chautauqua Institution historian and archivist.

The Center for the Study of Art, Architecture, History & Nature also sponsors an “Art of Investing: Nine Elements of Financial Literacy” series from 3:10 to 4 p.m. Mondays through Aug. 18 in Smith Memorial Library, led by Dennis Galucki. The winter series in the Central Library will resume after Labor Day.

NICKELS AND DIMES – Book clubs, service clubs, students and others seeking service projects are invited to collect spare change to help the locally based volunteer agency Global African Village keep young people in school in rural Uganda.

Collection containers for the Drive for Education are available by calling 834-3270. Donations also will be accepted in unofficial containers like piggy banks and coffee cans. Groups also may convert their change into a check made out to Global African Village and mailed to 37 Devereaux Ave., Buffalo, NY 14214.

Groups and people contributing $150 or more can sponsor a Ugandan student and follow his or her progress in school. All who participate will be acknowledged on the Global African Village website, in its newsletter and on its Facebook page, public relations director Sharon Green says. TEE IT UP – Families of FANA, which supports the FANA orphanage in Bogota, Colombia, will hold its silver anniversary golf outing and fundraiser July 14 at Wanakah Country Club, 5161 Lake Shore Road, Hamburg. More than 400 local families have adopted children from FANA.

Golfers will register from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Cocktails and auctions begin at 5 p.m., with a dinner and awards at 7. Tickets are $250 for golf and dinner, $100 for dinner only. For info, visit www.familiesoffana.org.

TIME OF NEED – A benefit to help with the long-term care of baby Andrew Wopperer-Constantino will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Lake Erie Italian Club, 3200 South Park Ave., Lackawanna. Andrew has ichythosis, an incurable skin disease that results in scaly skin, infections and other complications. Donation is $25, which includes food and beverages. NEW HORIZONS – Explore Buffalo is going places it hasn’t gone before during July, such as Williamsville and North Tonawanda, where three outings are planned during Canal Fest and there’s a two-for-the-price-of-one ticket deal.

Additional tours also have been added to the familiar routes, including evening outings for the Masters of American Architecture and Down by the River waterside excursions.

BIG SPLASH – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 25th anniversary Gelatin Splash raised a record $127,000 for the Western and Central New York Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

More than 1,000 people attended the festivities June 12 at Banchetti by Rizzo’s in Amherst to help support the fight against leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. A total of 102 participants took the “big plunge,” jumping into 1,000 gallons of cherry gelatin in return for donations.

Gary Burns, president and chief executive officer of EmpireEMCO Inc., was the top fundraiser. For generating $14,271 in donations, he won a five-night Caribbean cruise for two with a $500 airline voucher or a $1,500 travel voucher.
