HERITAGE UPDATE – Buffalo native Emeterio M. Otero, Ph.D., former executive dean of Monroe Community College, will be the keynote speaker as the Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York holds its second annual Community Breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday in Templeton Landing, 2 Templeton Terrace, at Erie Basin Marina.

There also will be a brief video overview by the council on the Hispanic History Project, “The Journey of Hispanics in Western New York,” which is being compiled with the help of the Buffalo History Museum, the Buffalo & Erie County Central Library, Randforce Associates, the University at Buffalo and SUNY Buffalo State.

PASSING NOTION – Today until 5 p.m. is the last chance to purchase a Summer Season Pass, which provides a three-month membership to the Buffalo History Museum and Preservation Buffalo Niagara, and discounts to their events.

For instance, members get a $5 discount on admission to the season’s first Party on the Portico at the Buffalo History Museum from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and jazz from keyboardist George Caldwell and his group, featuring saxophonist Bobby Militello.

There also is members-only access to the “Footprints of John R. Oishei” tour Wednesday and an end-of-season party for new members. Passes are $20 and can be purchased at the museum or online at www.preservationbuffaloniagara.org.

LOOKING UP – Skies promise to be clear Saturday, perfect for the evening astronomy program at 8:30 at the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center off Big Tree Road in Hamburg.

Telescopes will be available for viewing Jupiter very low in the west just after sunset, Mars high in the south, Saturn in the southeast, the Summer Triangle rising in the east and the Northern Crown constellation high in the southwest.

Filtered telescopes also can be used to view sunspots and solar flares before sunset. No preregistration is required. Visitors are welcome to bring their own telescopes. Fee is $3. For info, call 627-4560 or visit www.penndixie.org.
