OLAF FUB SEZ: According to English novelist Thomas Hardy, born on this date in 1840, “The main object of religion is not to get a man into heaven, but to get heaven into him.”

Here’s the Scoop

I just had an

ice cream cone

down by the water.

It cost me three and a quarter,

it was large and delish,

all I could wish.

Except that I recall

when an ice cream cone

cost almost nothing at all.

It was five cents when

I was a kid in the 1940s,

$3.25 could buy 65

ice cream cones!

It’s best not to

think about that.

I should just enjoy

the $3.25 ice cream cone

and be glad that I’ve

made it to 81

and can still have fun.

However, I think I will

open an ice cream stand

down by the water

and offer cones

five for a quarter,

so old people

can relive the dream

of five-cent ice cream.
