WAR ODYSSEY – Before he served as executive director of the Robert H. Jackson Center, before he was an assemblyman representing Chautauqua County, Rolland E. Kidder was a Navy patrol boat officer in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War.

We’ve got our sights set on perennials like a new deep pink astilbe named Astary Rose, an award-winning sedum dubbed Mr. Goodbud and a premium miniature hosta called Blue Mouse Ears.

There are many more perennials, including Carex Banana Boat, a bright yellow sage; Coral Reef, a new variety of dianthus; Cat’s Meow, a new variety of nepeta that blooms all summer; and a host of colorful and hardy annuals.

COLLEGE CASH – Applications are being accepted for the second annual $1,000 Friends of the Lewiston Library scholarship, which will be given to the student in need of financial assistance who writes the best essay on the importance of libraries and the services they provide.

High school seniors living in the Lewiston-Porter School District and who attended Lewiston-Porter High School or a private school are eligible. Applications are available at the high school guidance office or the Lewiston Library, 305 Eighth St. Deadline is April 15.

FUTURE HOME – Habitat for Humanity Buffalo will host what it is calling a Veteran Build Roof Raiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday in Hotel @ The Lafayette, 391 Washington St., to kick off a fundraising drive for a home to be built with a veteran family.

There will be theme baskets, auctions and other prizes, with Dominic Cortese serving as auctioneer and emcee. There also will be hors d’oeuvres, chocolate and wine tastings and desserts.
