TIME OF NEED – After battling heart disease for 22 years, Town of Tonawanda native Paulette Welker was admitted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester last year after suffering cardiac arrest and being put on the waiting list for a transplant. On Aug. 6, she was given the gift of life with a new heart, but she’s still unable to work while she recovers at home.

To help her with her expenses and ongoing medical treatments, a benefit will be held beginning at noon Sunday in Banchetti by Rizzo’s, 550 North French Road, Getzville. Donation is $20 and includes beverages, food and music. There also will be a cash bar. Psychics will give readings from noon to 2:30 p.m. Drawing for the basket auction will be at 4.

BOYS’ NIGHT OUT – Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School, 601 McKinley Parkway, will hold a Family Fun Night for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade boys and their families beginning at 5:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the school’s dining hall.

There will be a family-style dinner of spaghetti and meatballs catered by Chef’s Restaurant, followed by dessert and a trivia contest. After dinner, all are invited to cheer the Timon-St. Jude Tigers as they take on Olean High School in the gym. To make a reservation, call 826-3610, Ext. 222.

ISLAND HOPPING – The Grand Island Historical Society and the Buffalo Launch Club will give a special photo and video presentation titled “Two Small Islands in the Mighty Niagara: The Lore, Legend and Future of Strawberry and Motor Boat Islands” at 8 p.m. Saturday in Launch Club headquarters, 503 East River Road.

Presenters include Historical Society President Curt Nestark, Launch Club historian Tom Frauenheim, Niagara River historian Paul Leuchner and Gary Kenline, whose family owned Motor Boat Island from 1937 to 1984.

HOT COMPETITION – Jamestown-area restaurants and caterers, 15 to 20 of them, will field their finest recipes as they compete in SOUPer Bowl Sunday III from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, 433 E. Terrace Ave., Lakewood.

Contestants will include the winners of the two previous SOUPer Bowls – Elegant Edibles and Gametime Sports Bar & Grill. The public will vote for their favorites. Proceeds will benefit the robotic surgery program at WCA Hospital in Jamestown.

Tickets are $10 in advance for adults, $5 in advance for children under 12, and are available at the WCA Development Office and the host club. At the door, they will be $12 and $6. There also will be music by DJs Unlimited and a basket raffle. The first 300 guests will receive a complimentary soup mug courtesy of sponsor Maplevale Farms.
