GEARING UP – Looking ahead to the December holidays is Buffalo City Ballet, which needs dancers for its production of “The Nutcracker” to be staged Dec. 6 to 8 in the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts.

Auditions will be held Saturday in Buffalo City Ballet Studios in the Tri-Main Center, Suite 351, 2495 Main St. Those ages 10 to 12 will try out from noon to 1 p.m., while girls ages 13 to 18 with experience in pointe work will audition from 1 to 2:30 p.m. For info, call director Marvin Askew at 833-1243 or 864-1832.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE – Visitors will be looking down and looking up in the Fossil-Astronomy Day program from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Recreation Center off Big Tree Road in Hamburg.

Look down and dig for fossils of 380 million-year-old sea creatures. Experts will help identify them, and visitors can keep all that they find. To assist in looking up, filtered telescopes will be aimed at the sky for viewing sun spots and solar flares.

Collectors can bring hammers, chisels, small garden shovels, safety glasses and plastic bags or buckets. No pre-registration is required. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for kids 12 and under. For info, call 627-4560 or visit www.penndixie.org.

CALL OF THE WILD – The Western New York Shrine Center, 1600 Southwestern Blvd., West Seneca, will host a sportsmen’s raffle, offering gear for hunting, fishing and other pursuits, from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $20 and include food and beverages. For info, call 674-8666.

MAKING HEADWAY – Progress will be the topic as the Eggertsville Community Organization holds its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 4007 Main St., Eggertsville.

The Eggertsville Task Force, with Amherst Town Council Member Steve Sanders and Deputy Supervisor Guy Marlette as co-chairmen, will review the “Report and Recommendations,” which was issued in September 2010.

Also on hand will be representatives from the Amherst Building, Planning and Police departments to discuss changes that have been made during the past few years at the suggestion of the task force. All are welcome.

BODY AND SOUL – Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, 4369 S. Buffalo St., celebrates the start of the new school year with a free Welcome Back Pancake Breakfast at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. All are welcome.

During the worship service that follows at 10:30, there will be a special blessing of the backpacks for students from preschool through eighth grade. Children are invited to bring their new backpacks.

DRUMSTICK BEAT – BW’s Barbecue, beer, music and classic cars will be featured Saturday at the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company’s annual Chicken & Rib Barbecue on the fire company grounds at Route 5 and Rogers Road, Hamburg. Dinners will be served from 3 to 8 p.m. or until sold out; eat in or take out at the drive-through.

Car show runs from 3 to 6 p.m. The beer tent will be open until midnight, and Strictly Hip will provide music from 7 to 11 p.m. Theme basket raffles also included.

Trinity Old Lutheran Church, 3445 Sheridan Drive at Larch Road, Eggertsville, hosts a Chiavetta’s barbecue chicken dinner and theme basket auction from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Dinners are $10, $9 in advance by calling the church office at 836-3868.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Resurrection Health Center in Buffalo and the Family Justice Center of Erie County.
