William R. Weber Jr., an Alden town councilman and retired Alden High School teacher, died Wednesday. He was 62.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Weber attended Bishop Neumann High School and SUNY Buffalo State, where he graduated with a master’s degree in education in 1973.

He met his future wife, the former Rebecca Bieger, at a horse farm and married a year after a mutual friend set them up. They moved to Alden, where he taught industrial arts at Alden High School for 33 years.

He loved being a teacher and was dedicated to the students he taught, said his niece, Emily Obrist.

“He made a big impact on the lives of students,” she said. “He was very well respected.”

Mr. Weber had served on the Town Board since 2006 as a councilman and deputy supervisor. He also served as liaison to the Alden Historical Society and on several committees, including the Highway Committee and the Economic Development Committee.

“He was well known and loved the town,” said Alden Town Clerk Ralph Witt, a close friend. “He loved to serve the people.”

Mr. Weber also ran Weber’s Christmas Tree Farm, using his time off in the summer from teaching to hand-prune every tree. He had students come to the farm to help him plant trees.

He coached wrestling at the school for several years.

A lifelong member of the National Rifle Association, he enjoyed hunting and trapping, and made trips out west and to the Adirondack mountains to hunt.

“He was a real outdoorsman,” Witt said.

Mr. Weber also enjoyed restoring old cars, and owned two pickup trucks and a Corvette.

He was also a state wildlife control officer and a member of the Christmas Tree Farmer’s Association of Western New York.

In addition to his wife of 39 years, Mr. Weber is survived by his mother, Patricia Weber; four sisters, Theresa Casey, Karen Ostrum, Patricia Adolf and Lisa Schomber; and five brothers, James, Michael, John, Mark and Gregory.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2021 Sandridge Road, Alden.
