Ruth Lois Reading of West Falls, a longtime East Aurora High School nurse, died May 4 at Absolut Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Aurora Park in East Aurora after a short illness. She was 80.
Born Ruth Lois Wiggin in Albany, she moved to East Aurora in 1947, graduating from East Aurora High School in 1951 and the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1955. She married Richard Reading in 1956, making their home on his family farm in West Falls.
Mrs. Reading worked as a nurse at Bertrand Chaffee Memorial Hospital in Springville, and as a private duty nurse before taking time off to raise her family.
She returned to work in 1974 as East Aurora High School nurse and held that position until retiring in 1994. A caring person, she was still in contact with many of her former students.
She enjoyed gardening, music, physical fitness and the outdoors. She was a longtime member of the Baker Memorial United Methodist Church choir and was a docent and volunteer at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. She was an avid tennis player, cross-country skier and hiker.
Mrs. Reading donated her body to the University at Buffalo.
Survivors in addition to her husband of 58 years include a daughter, Linda; a son, David; a brother, Leon Wiggin; a sister, Lucille Wetherald; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 14 in Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 345 Main St., East Aurora.
