Michael J. McDermid of Lewiston, a prominent businessman and financial consultant, died unexpectedly Saturday at his cottage in Crane Lake, Ont. He was 66.
Born in Nashville, Tenn., Mr. McDermid was raised in Niagara Falls and graduated from Bishop Duffy High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University and a master’s degree from the University at Buffalo.
He served in the U.S. Army during the early 1970s.
A certified financial planner and chartered life underwriter, Mr. McDermid was general agent of MassMutual Financial Group in Buffalo, heading the agency for 33 years before retiring June 1, 2008.
For the past eight years, he served as chairman of McDermid Financial Group, an arm of MassMutual Financial Group. His son, Geoffrey, is president and chief executive officer of the company.
Mr. McDermid was listed as one of the top professionals in money and finance by the American Registry, a recognition given for excellence based on peer recommendations, client ratings, financial expert evaluations and achievements.
He served as past president of MassMutual’s General Agents Association and was past president and a board member of the Estate Analysts of Western New York and the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site.
He also was an active contributor to the United States Olympic Team and Wounded Warrior Project.
In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 44 years, the former Karen J. Schulz; a daughter, Colleen Powers; two sisters, Catherine Chapman and Mary Bryant; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Niagara Falls Country Club, 505 Mountain View Drive, Lewiston.
