Mary Mercy Robinson, a registered nurse, died Saturday in Buffalo General Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 86.
The first baby born in then-new Mercy Hospital, the former Mary Mercy McMullen was a lifelong South Buffalo resident and a graduate of South Park High School.
The mother of eight, Mrs. Robinson worked as an operator for New York Telephone and as a dental assistant in the office of Dr. Richard Sheehan on Abbott Road.
Once her children were raised, she studied at Trocaire College Nursing School and became a registered nurse at age 55.
She began at Sisters Hospital in 1980 as a nurse’s aide, then became a nurse in the orthopedic unit.
She especially loved babies, and after she retired in 1992 she helped care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include four sons, Patrick, Francis X., Daniel and Matthew; four daughters, Mary Mertlbauer, Jane Gilbride, Margaret Albers and Laura Dickinson; a sister, Jeanne Knauser; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:15 a.m. Thursday in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 450 Abbott Road.
