Joyce P. Steltenpohl, a retired teacher and guidance counselor, died Sept. 7 after surgery in Orlando, Fla. She was 90.
Born Joyce Marjorie Pfeffer in North Boston, she was a graduate of Hamburg High School and Buffalo State Teachers College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and home economics. She was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron and Pi Lambda Theta honor societies.
She taught home economics and science in Buffalo and Lockport before becoming a home economics teacher at Pine Hill High School in Cheektowaga in 1950.
She earned master’s degrees in education and guidance counseling from the University of Buffalo and, from 1960 to 1980, she was a home economics teacher in the Lancaster schools and guidance counselor at Aurora Middle School in Lancaster. She inaugurated career days for high school students to help them decide on their futures.
She was a crew leader in the 1960 Census.
A former resident of Buffalo and Eden, she was active in the Buffalo State College Alumni Association, the UB Alumni Association, the Merrill Palmer Alumnae Association, the former St. John’s United Church of Christ, now Community Church, in Eden, and the Wally Byman Caravan Club International.
She traveled around the world, visited all 50 states and every Canadian province. She enjoyed tent camping and motoring with her Airstream trailers. She also enjoyed golf, sewing, crocheting and quilting. She had lived in Titusville, Fla., since 1991.
Her first marriage to Harry Feucht ended in 1952. She married Bliss Emmett VanEvery in 1953. He died in 1959. In 1968, she married Konrod Groetsch, who died in 1979. She was married again to Robert Steltenpohl in 1986. He died in 2005.
Survivors include a son, Harry P. VanEvery; a sister, Caryl Pfeffer Persons; a step-son, James Steltenpohl; and three stepdaughters, Eleanor Groetsch Williams, Jaclyn Steltenpohl Welch and Janet Steltenpohl Landers.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 in St. John’s Community Church, 2871 E. Church St., Eden.
