Jane Cole Godin, a longtime volunteer and leader in many community organizations, especially those in the local Jewish community, died Saturday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a battle with cancer. She was 75.
A North Buffalo native, the former Jane Hirsch was a graduate of Park School and Wheelock College in Boston with an undergraduate degree in education.
She married Carl M. Cole, an attorney, in 1957. The couple was married for 40 years, he died in 1997.
In 2001, she married William Godin, who survives her. Mrs. Godin, a homemaker, lived in Amherst most of her life and until her death. She worked at various times in her life as a teacher and at a nursing home, where she directed volunteers. She also owned a Diet Center location in Amherst for several years.
It was as a leader and active volunteer in many area community organizations that Mrs. Godin found her true passion. For some four decades, she served as a leader in the Jewish community in the Buffalo area.
In 1981, Mrs. Godin served as chairwoman of the women’s division of the United Jewish Fund Campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo. She held various positions at the federation, including board member and member of the executive committee. More recently, she was co-chairwoman of kickoff dinners for the United Jewish Fund campaigns in 2006 and 2007.
Mrs. Godin also served as a board member for the American Jewish Committee. She held posts on the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies board. Godin was also active in the Jewish Community Center, serving on its board for years, and Jewish Family Service.
In addition, she was an active board member of the United Way.
Within the past decade, she received the Nathan Benderson Community Service Award from the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo.
Mrs. Godin enjoyed reading and knitting and was considered a wonderful cook by her family.
Besides her husband, survivors include two daughters, Nancy Schaer and Barbara Cole; a son, Richard Cole; a brother, David Hirsch; and a sister, Suzanne Hirsch.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Temple Beth Zion, 805 Delaware Ave., Buffalo.
