Herman J. Bowman, a former superintendent of the East Aurora School District, died Feb. 24 in Autumn View Health Care Facility, Hamburg, after a brief illness. He was 87.

Born in Uniontown, Pa., Mr. Bowman attended Roberts Junior College before serving in the Army as a technician with Service Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, in Austria after World War II. He resumed his education afterward, earning a bachelor’s degree from Greenville College in Illinois.

A resident of Orchard Park, Mr. Bowman began his career in 1950 as a science teacher at Amherst Central High School. After teaching and serving as an assistant principal in Amherst, he was appointed principal of Orchard Park Junior High School in 1959.

He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Buffalo, after which he went to work for the East Aurora School District.

He was appointed assistant superintendent in 1967 and then superintendent in 1975, serving in the latter position for 10 years.

In retirement, Mr. Bowman worked for 10 years as an associate professor of teacher education at Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili. During that time, he lived in Spencer- port and was a member of Pearce Memorial Church in North Chili.

His interests included golf, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He was a member of Kiwanis and the New York State Council of School Superintendents.

An active member of Wesleyan Church of Orchard Park, he volunteered in a variety of ministries, including Youth Stockade, prison ministry, Father Baker Manor and the “Friday Crew” at the church.

His first wife, the former Carolyn J. Lee, died in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, the former Doris J. Gutekunst; two daughters, Lynn Mahone and Jennifer Perry; three sons, Dr. Wayne, Scott and James; two sisters, Gertrude Kenney and Evelyn Tucker; two brothers, Orrin and Clifton; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. March 22 in Wesleyan Church of Orchard Park, 7295 Ellicott Road.
